Crafted in the traditional Wucai  ceramic technique, this cup features the Guadie motif - a prevalent late Qing decorative pattern comprising butterflies, pumpkins, and entwined vines. The motif symbolizes prolific offspring and enduring familial prosperity in Chinese culture.

Wucai can be translated as ‘five-colored’but the actual number of colors applied is not strictly limited. The term is best understood as simply multicolored. It first appeared during the reign of the Ming dynasty Emperor Jiajing, who ruled the Chinese empire between 1521 and 1567.

Wucai porcelain is characterised by the overglaze decoration of colored enamels after firing the porcelain once with a blue underglaze design. The overglaze enamels include a variety of colors such as red, green, blue, yellow and purple. Once the colored overglaze enamels are applied, the porcelain is then fired a second time, but at a lower temperature.
